Huawei tries to register three names with Ark OS in EU
Huawei tried last week to register three names in the European Union with the name Ark in them. The manufacturer makes it clear in the applications that the names have to do with an operating system.
The description of all three applications to the EUIPO, the office where companies can register trademarks in the European Union, states that they concern ‘design and development of compiler software and operating systems for electronic devices’ and ‘design and development of mobile phone applications with compiler software’ .
They are the only names that Huawei has registered with this description in the European Union last month. Huawei is also trying to capture HongMeng, a name that has been associated with its own smartphone operating system. However, there is another, much broader description.
Ark OS may be the name of the Android alternative Huawei is developing, Android Headlines guesses, which found the applications in its database. The name has a symbolic connotation in Western culture. The name Ark is best known from the Biblical Ark, on which Noah kept animals safe during the Flood.
Huawei can no longer trade with American companies from August, so it no longer has an Android license. It will also have to look for new suppliers as an alternative to American companies such as Broadcom and Micron. That all happened after the US government placed Huawei on the Entity List of companies.
That happened because the US government sees Huawei’s ties to the Chinese government as a threat to national security, because the Chinese government, according to the US, is spying a lot in Western countries. In addition, the US has sued Huawei for violating a trade ban with Iran, something the US had previously placed ZTE on that same list.
