Huawei starts offering its own payment system outside China
Chinese smartphone maker Huawei has started offering its own payment system Huawei Pay outside of China. The first country where the payment system is available outside of China is Russia, the manufacturer says.
Customers can add a pass from Gazprombank and Russian Agricultural Bank, Huawei says. After adding the card, users can pay contactless at ATMs in the country. This will be possible from the first months of next year.
For the system, customers need a phone that is compatible. Huawei is updating several models to support it, including Mate 20 phones, P20 phones, P10 phones, Honor 10, Honor V10, and Honor 9.
The Chinese manufacturer wants to offer its payment system in more countries. Which countries these are and when that will happen is unknown. Huawei Pay has been operating in China since 2016. Huawei is collaborating with UnionPay for the service. That is the company that provides the technology for the cards of both Russian banks that will support the service.
