Huawei CEO: 4GB RAM is enough for smartphones
A Huawei chief executive, Lao Shi, has said that 4GB of RAM is enough for a smartphone to function smoothly. He makes these statements based on tests with Huawei phones with the Kirin 960-soc, which according to Shi outperformed competing smartphones with 6GB.
According to Lao Shi, 6GB of memory is not necessary as long as the operating system is optimized as much as possible. The CEO cites iOS as an example, which, according to him, would not need much working memory. Gizmochina reports this based on statements made by Lao Shi on his Weibo page.
According to the CEO, there is a competition between manufacturers to release smartphones with as much RAM as possible. He likens this competition to the nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The CEO believes that adding 2GB or 4GB of RAM will only make the phones more expensive for users, who, according to him, do not need 6GB. According to him, phones with 4GB of memory and 128GB of storage are much better than phones with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.
Vivo introduced the Xplay 5 Elite last year. This was the first smartphone to come on the market with 6GB of RAM. Later, there were more smartphones with 6GB of RAM, such as the OnePlus 3, the Samsung C9 Pro and the Xiaomi Mi Note 2.
In the long run, devices will also be released with 8GB of RAM. Asus introduced the Zenfone AR at CES 2017, which will have 8GB of RAM. It is also expected that, for example, the OnePlus 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 will receive the same amount of RAM.
