Huawei and Leica have entered into a partnership in the field of camera technology for smartphones. The Chinese group and the German manufacturer want to cooperate in the long term, including in the field of research and design.

The two companies talk about a strategic partnership and a long-term alliance, but concrete details about the plans are not yet known. However, it must be a collaboration in the field of research & development, design, engineering, user experience, marketing and distribution.

“The partnership with Huawei offers Leica a great opportunity to bring its optics expertise into a new product segment,” said Leica CEO Oliver Kaltner. For Huawei, it is an opportunity to distinguish itself with the camera capabilities of its devices, a part where it still has to let competitors go for it.

Leica has previously collaborated on smartphones, with Panasonic. The result of that collaboration in 2014 was the DMC-CM1, a camera smartphone that runs Android and contains a 1″ sensor with a 20 megapixel resolution. The f/2.8 bright DC Elmarit lens comes from Leica. That device. was continued at the beginning of this year in the form of the CM10.
