HTC’s revenue in April increased by 12.7 percent compared to the same month last year. The company is likely to benefit from the sale of the One M8, which has been in stores since April. HTC’s total turnover in April amounted to about 525 million euros.

This makes April the second month of 2014 in which HTC makes a profit. In March, the company made a profit of 16.3 billion Taiwan dollars, which translates to about 390 million euros.

Over the entire first quarter of this year, HTC still performed worse than a year earlier. Turnover decreased compared to the same period last year from 42.8 billion Taiwanese dollars, converted just over 1.2 billion euros, to 33.1 billion Taiwanese dollars, converted around 790 million euros. As a result, the company made a net quarterly loss of about 40,000 euros. HTC expects to make around 1.55 billion euros in turnover in the second quarter of 2014. That is less than the 1.96 billion euros turnover that the company booked in the second quarter of 2013.

In the first quarter of this year, the number of high-end phones sold by HTC also decreased. Sales of HTC’s midrange phones did increase in the first quarter of this year. Especially in countries with an emerging economy, interest in these models is increasing. According to Reuters, HTC will soon dominate the mid-range phone market.

HTC hopes to avoid disappointing sales this year with ‘more effective and efficient’ marketing for the One M8. “In 2014, we aim to sell more units of the M8 than we did of the M7, which was already the best-selling model in HTC history,” said Chialin Chang, HTC’s chief financial officer. However, HTC sold fewer M7s than the company originally expected.

HTC has been struggling with disappointing results for a while and the sales of the M8 have to turn the tide. At the end of last year, HTC still managed to record a quarterly profit, but that was due to the sale of its share in audio manufacturer Beats Audio. According to rumors, Lenovo is looking for a takeover of HTC.
