HTC financial figures point to disappointing phone sales

The turnover figures that HTC announced on Monday morning indicate that HTC sells considerably fewer smartphones than it had previously estimated. Turnover is about 35 percent behind what the company had expected at the end of April.

Where HTC for the second quarter expected a turnover of between 46 and 51 billion Taiwanese dollars, the turnover amounted to 33 billion Taiwanese dollars, currently converted around one billion euros. That’s about half of the manufacturer’s sales in the same quarter of last year, when the One M8 came out.

While the short release doesn’t say anything about a cause of sales falling short of expectations just over two months ago, it’s likely due to disappointing sales of the One M9 series. HTC expected a lot from that series.

Assuming that HTC sells its devices on average between 200 and 400 euros, it delivered roughly between 2.5 and 5 million smartphones last quarter. HTC is probably still far behind competitors such as Samsung, Apple, Lenovo, Xiaomi, Huawei, LG and Sony.

In addition to the turnover, the Taiwanese manufacturer will also be unsatisfied with the loss. It suffered a net loss after tax of around 234 million euros, almost a quarter of turnover.
