HTC confirms that phones with Snapdragon 835 are still months away
An HTC executive has confirmed that no manufacturer will present a phone with Qualcomm’s new high-end Snapdragon 835-soc next month. Last week there was a rumor that Samsung has bought the first batch of the soc in its entirety.
HTC CEO Chialin Chang tells the website Tbreak that HTC will be one of the first manufacturers to release a phone with the ‘next flagship soc’. He is most likely referring to the upcoming Snapdragon 835, the 10nm soc that Qualcomm announced last year.
According to him, the HTC U Ultra that will be released at the beginning of March will have the most powerful soc of the moment for ‘a few months’. That phone has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821. “We want a few months of leadership before the next ‘flagship soc’ comes. But that will happen in a different time frame, not at MWC. Not with us, not with any other manufacturer. You can. I tell you with certainty.” MWC is Mobile World Congress, the telecom fair that takes place in Barcelona in a month and where BlackBerry, Motorola, Huawei, Nokia and LG, among others, show new top models.
Last week, it was rumored that Samsung has bought up the entire first batch of Snapdragon 835-socs for its Galaxy S8, which the manufacturer is said to be releasing in April. HTC is the first smartphone maker to explicitly state that phones with the Snapdragon 835 will not be at MWC. Last year the first phone with the Snapdragon 820 was at CES in January, the same happened the year before with the Snapdragon 810.
The CEO also confirms that HTC will not come up with a smartwatch in the short term. Photos of a prototype surfaced last year, but it appears that it is no longer in development.
