HP has initiated a recall for incendiary batteries shipped worldwide in several HP and Compaq laptops between March 2013 and August 2015. Spare batteries may also be affected. HP will replace the defective batteries.

These include batteries from HP Compaq, HP ProBook, HP Envy, HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario laptops. Batteries sold as spares or supplied as replacements may also be affected. According to HP, the batteries can overheat and pose a fire hazard.

HP has made a table of the laptop models that may contain a defective battery. Not all batteries are affected. Users of the devices must first check whether their battery is included with the affected units. HP has released a program for this that laptop owners can download. Manual validation is also possible using the barcode and serial number on the battery. All information about the replacement procedure can be found on the HP website.

It is not known how many batteries are involved. In 2009 and 2010, HP recalled a total of 124,000 batteries due to fire hazards. In 2012, the company settled a lawsuit with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
