HP not coming with Windows RT tablet
HP will not release an arm-based tablet with Windows RT. Instead, the company is targeting tablets with x86 chips like those from Intel and AMD. The largest computer manufacturer in the world will target the business market first.
At the beginning of this year, there were reports that HP would be working on tablets with Intel Atom processors, as well as variants with arm-socs. The latter plans have since been scrapped, a spokesperson told Bloomberg. “The decision was influenced by input from our customers,” writes Marlene Somsak, HP spokeswoman in the US, “The robust and well-established ecosystem of x86 applications provides the best user experience today and for the foreseeable future.”
In mid-June, Microsoft introduced its own Surface tablets with arm chips. The question was how the hardware partners would react to the fact that they now have to compete with the Windows developer from Redmond. However, HP would have made the decision not to release arm tablets before Microsoft’s plans became known, according to Somsak. HP will initially target business users with its Windows 8 tablets. At the end of April, a document surfaced showing that HP is working on the Slate 8. This is a tablet with a 10.1″ screen, 9.2 millimeters thick and 0.68 kilograms in weight, which talks about docking options and support for multitouch and a stylus.Which x86 processor the tablet will get is unknown.
