HP Introduces Compact Z2 Mini Workstation

HP has announced a compact workstation that will be available in a configuration with Intel Xeon processors and an Nvidia Quadro card. The approximately 20 by 20 cm system is intended for graphic professionals who work with CAD software, for example.

The precise dimensions of the Z2 Mini G3 are 21.59 x 21.59 centimeters with a height of 5.79 cm, making the system one of the smallest workstations. HP makes the Z2 Mini available in several configurations. Cheaper versions will get Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors, but versions with Xeon E3 1200 v5 chips will also be available. These are Skylake quad-cores with clock speeds from 2GHz to 3.7GHz. The GPU is optionally the Quadro M620 from Nvidia, which has 2GB of vram.

With the Quadro GPU, the Z2 Mini offers four display ports. There are two configurations with a Core i processor and integrated GPU. HP can place its Z-Drives in the box and this pci-e m2-ssd offers a maximum of 1.5TB storage capacity with the Z2. In addition, there is room for a 2.5″ storage medium. Furthermore, the workstation offers space for up to two SODIMMs, for a maximum of 32GB DDR4. There are two USB 3.1-c Gen. 1 interfaces without Thunderbolt support, which means that the theoretical speed remains at 5Gbit/s.In addition, there are four USB 3.0 type-a connections.

HP claims to have paid a lot of attention to quiet cooling, making the system 63 percent quieter than existing mini PCs from the manufacturer. In terms of airflow, blockage of the sides and back of a full desk has been taken into account: the grilles are located at the corners and are protected by a construction. The mini-workstation can be attached to the back of monitors with a vesa connection.

HP will make the Z2 Mini G3 available in December. The suggested retail price is 850 euros.
