HP introduces 45″ superwide with 5120×1440 pixels
At CES, HP will show the E45c G5, the first 45″ superwide monitor with 5120×1440 pixels. The curved screen has the same surface area as two 24″ screens side by side. HP also showed ten other new screens in the G5 series.
The E45c G5 is interesting because it offers a new combination of resolution and screen diagonal. There were previously monitors with 5120×1440 pixels, but they had a diagonal of 49″, making them the same size as two 27″ screens side by side. HP says it has opted for a screen size of 45″ (actually 44.5″) for people who find a 49″ screen a bit too big on the desk.
The E45c G5’s VA panel has a 1500R curvature, a claimed contrast of 3000:1 and a maximum brightness of 400cd/m², which can be tuned via the built-in light sensor. The screen shows 99 percent of the sRGB color space. The maximum refresh rate is 165Hz, with FreeSync available up to 48Hz. In addition to HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort, two USB-C ports are available, both with 65W power delivery.
The built-in kvm feature allows the built-in ethernet port and peripherals connected to the 4-port USB hub to be automatically shared between the two computers. The image from both systems can be displayed side by side on the screen. HP has also built in a feature called ‘Virtual dual display’, where the screen can appear to a system as two separate screens. For example, you can run a video conferencing application ‘full screen’ on one half of the display, but do something else at the same time.
At CES, HP showed many more screens in the E-series G5, which comprises a total of eleven monitors. The smallest has a diagonal of 22 inches and a full HD resolution. One of the new screens is a touchscreen. In addition to the E45c G5, four other models have USB-C docking with 65W power delivery, albeit with the other screens with only one port. All monitors in the series are made from 90 percent recycled or renewable materials, according to HP.
The E-series G5 displays should be available in the United States this month. When they will be released here and what they will cost is still unknown.
