HP Expands Notebook Battery Recall with ProBook G4 Models
HP has expanded a massive recall from a year ago to include more laptop models. Some batteries in these laptops can overheat and pose a fire and burn hazard.
Last year’s recall has expanded to include five laptops in the ProBook 4xx G4 series. In total, the promotion now concerns batteries HP used in 20 laptops sold between December 2015 and April 2018. Not all batteries HP used for the laptops have an increased risk of overheating. The company offers a validation tool that allows owners of the laptops to check whether their battery is covered.
These are batteries that are often built into the system and cannot be replaced by customers themselves. This is done by an HP technician as part of the promotion, at no cost.
HP advises customers with an eligible laptop to install a bios update. This update puts the battery in a ‘Battery Safety Mode’. The battery then loses its charge and can no longer be charged. The laptop will then only work if it is connected to the mains.
