Videobelapp Houseparty gained about fifty million new users last month, the co-founder said in an interview. This concerns the number of new users who have created an account.

This is a number that is perhaps seven times higher than in an average month, Bloomberg writes. The app is mainly used for video calling, but unlike competitors such as Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams, it is mainly used for private conversations. In addition, users can play games together via the app while video calling.

Houseparty does not want to say how many daily users are in the app. Competitor Zoom jumped from ten million active users a few months ago to two hundred million now. It is unknown how many of them have created an account with the service.

Video calling apps have become popular as governments around the world try to persuade people to gather less in a physical space and stay at home. Houseparty has been around for several years and has been owned by Epic Games since last year. The video chat app is from the makers of Meerkat, a service for live streaming videos on Twitter.
