Homemade Pokémon Uranium game has been taken offline by creators
After Pokémon Uranium has been downloaded 1.5 million times, the makers have taken the game offline. The PC game was nine years in the making. In the 2d game, players can battle each other online and trade Pokémon.
The makers say they have been made aware of several takedown notices sent by attorneys representing Nintendo America. Although they say they have not been contacted personally, they have removed the official download from the website. The team says they did so out of ‘respect for Nintendo’s wishes’. However, the makers will continue to release “news and updates” related to Pokémon Uranium through their official channels.
Since the game has been downloaded so many times, it seems likely that it will continue to pop up even though the official download link has been removed. The makers emphasize that they have “no connections” with the fans who are re-uploading the game and point out that users should be careful about downloading files from unknown sources.
Pokémon Uranium was released last week. It is a PC game inspired by the 2D games that came out for Nintendo’s handheld consoles. Pokémon Uranium contains over a hundred new Pokémon, including a new category of nuclear critters that must be collected in the also new Tandor region. In the game it is possible to fight against each other online and trade Pokémon.
Nintendo is known for protecting its intellectual property. The game maker recently had the Nintendo Power magazine archive that was published on Archive.org removed. Websites offering a fan-made remake of Metroid 2 for download also received takedown notices from lawyers after the game received a lot of media attention.
