The company iRobot has announced the Create 2, a robot vacuum cleaner-like robot that can be modified by hobbyists. For example, the movements of the Create 2 can be adjusted, as well as the sounds and ‘behaviour’ of the robot vacuum cleaner.

According to the manufacturer, the Create 2 is specially made for curious hobbyists and can be tweaked both hardware and software. For example, the robot can be connected to a PC, Arduino or Raspberry Pi via a serial-to-USB cable for programming, while the Create 2 can also be controlled wirelessly. The robot housing is also marked with markings where modifications are possible.

IRobot provides a number of sample projects, including 3d files that can be used to fabricate accessories with a 3d printer. Software will also be made available to manipulate the robot’s movements and make other software modifications.

According to the manufacturer, the Create 2 mainly wants to stimulate students to get started with products such as moving robots. The Create 2 will be available in the US this month for 200 dollars, or 162 euros.
