In addition to smartphones, the Finnish company HMD will also make tablets with the Nokia brand name. Nokia made this known now that the deal between the company and HMD has gone into effect. The first HMD phones and tablets will arrive next year.

The license will run for ten years, both companies say. Not only the smartphones and tablets, but also the cheap mobile phones come under the responsibility of HMD Global. HMD has been given a page on Nokia’s website to showcase its products.

HMD has now also gathered its team. Of the top people mentioned, a vast majority come from Nokia and Microsoft Mobile. The few who have no experience with the former Finnish market leader often come from competitors such as Motorola and HTC.

The first smartphones with the Nokia brand name that HMD develops will appear in the first half of 2017. The tablets should follow soon. Nokia disappeared as a brand name for smartphones in 2014, when the Finnish company switched to Lumia as a brand name after the acquisition. Nokia remained on the cheap mobiles then. Microsoft has sold the license to the Nokia brand name for mobile phones to HMD, the factory in Vietnam came into the hands of Foxconn.
