HMD presents 53 euro Nokia C1 smartphone for African market

HMD Global has announced its first smartphone in the C-series. The C1 runs on Android Go based on Android 9 Pie and has a price tag of 5999 Kenyan shillings, currently about 53 euros.

The Nokia C1 resembles the previously presented Nokia 1 Plus and has a 12.3×6.2cm screen with a 5.45″ diagonal and a resolution of 960×480 pixels. The phone runs on an undisclosed quad-core processor with a clock speed of 1.3GHz, assisted by a RAM of 1GB and an expandable storage of 16GB.

The device has a single 5-megapixel camera on the back and a single 5-megapixel camera on the front. The 2500mAh battery of the C1 can be charged via the micro-USB port on the bottom. The phone has to do without 4g, but does have 3g on board. The phone measures 14.7×7.1cm and is 8.7mm thick. HMD has only announced the phone for the Kenyan market so far, but a HMD CEO says that it is also intended for other countries in Africa and Asia. What those are is unknown.

It is the first time that HMD presents an Android smartphone in the C series. In China, the company has already presented smartphones in the X series. Nothing is known about a European release of the cheap smartphone.
