Hitachi has announced that it will stop its semiconductor production for communication equipment in more than a year. The company still makes chips for telecommunications, among other things. Hitachi’s Information & Telecommunication Systems division will focus on product development and design.

The Information & Telecommunication Systems branch of the Japanese technology group Hitachi will continue to exist, but the manpower and production facilities that are currently responsible for the chip production of modem chips, among other things, will be transferred to other branches. As of March 31, 2014, five quarters from now, the company will reduce its semiconductor production to strike. Hitachi’s semiconductor division made chips both for Hitachi itself and for external customers.

Hitachi has been manufacturing semiconductor chips since 1975 Information & Telecommunication Systems division. In 2004, a reorganization took place to shift focus to the design and development of semiconductor products, but production was still in-house. This will end in 2014. Hitachi previously sold all of its hard drive and TV divisions.
