The HDMI Forum has released the HDMI 2.0a specification. Added is the possibility to run images in HDR format via HDMI. It is likely that manufacturers will be able to update devices to HDMI 2.0a via a firmware update.

The HDMI 2.0a specification makes it possible, for example, for TVs that support HDR display, to recognize the HDR metadata flags when receiving a video signal via HDMI. The update also includes support for the recently updated HDR Static Metadata Extensions from the CEA.

The HDMI Forum leaves it open as to whether new hardware is required for the standard, but Hdtvtest recently wrote that according to TP Vision updating via a firmware update for its TVs will be possible. Hdmi 2.0 was announced in 2013 and allows the throughput of 4k video at 60fps. Most UHD televisions that will hit the market in 2015 support HDMI 2.0.

HDR is seen as the next step for TVs to offer better picture quality. The technique ensures that the contrast of the image is increased by, among other things, better displaying the peaks in brightness. However, the major electronics organizations and TV manufacturers have not yet arrived at an overarching standard for HDR playback. Televisions with HDR support were demonstrated during CES in January. There is almost no HDR content available yet.

An explanation and the state of affairs regarding HDR was discussed in an earlier background article and an overview article about the CES.
