HBO has shown for the first time an image of the upcoming series based on PlayStation game The Last of Us. It is a single photo, showing the main characters Joel and Ellie from the back. The series is currently in production.

Although it is a single image When Joel and Ellie are only seen from the back, it seems that HBO has accurately transferred the atmosphere of the game to the TV series. The decor and scenery seem straight out of the game. The main characters are played by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.

The series is being shot in Canada and filming started in July this year. All shooting should be ready by June 2022 and the series is expected later that same year. It is HBO’s first TV series based on a game. The production is being made in collaboration with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions and Naughty Dog. The latter is the developer of the game.

The first season will consist of ten episodes, written by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckman. Mazin is the writer of the HBO miniseries Chernobyl and Druckman is the writer of the games. Composer Gustavo Santaolalla provides the music, just like in the games.

The creators have previously indicated in interviews that the series will follow the story of the game and that some content will be expanded. Some of the dialogue from the game is taken literally in the TV series. The series will also contain parts that have been cut from the first game.

Tommy, Joel’s brother, is played by Gabriel Luna. Nico Parker plays Joel’s daughter, Sarah, and Merle Dandrige is featured in the TV series as Marlene, leader of the Fireflies resistance group. She plays the same role in the game.
