HardKernel comes with quadcore counterpart of Raspberry Pi

The South Korean manufacturer HardKernel has announced the Odroid-x. The Odroid-x is a small and cheap development board with a quad-core processor, on which Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich is installed by default.

The Odroid-x is just like the Raspberry Pi, a cheap development board. The Odroid-x, however, has a quad-core Samsung Exynos 4412 processor, which is clocked at 1.4 GHz. This processor is based on the ARM Cortex-A9 architecture. A Mali-400 GPU is also present on the board, which should provide the image over the micro HDMI output. This GPU is also in the Samsung Galaxy SIII. The manufacturer speaks of a ‘PC-like performance’.

The memory is 1GB, four times as much as with the Raspberry Pi. There is an SD card reader for storage and there is nothing to complain about in terms of connections. The board has six USB ports, a 100Mb Ethernet connection, micro HDMI, audio jack and an SD card reader. Android 4.0.4 ICS is installed by default as the operating system, although a video on the website also shows a working Ubuntu 12.04 installation.

At 90x94mm, the board is about twice as large as the Raspberry Pi. With this sign it is also the intention that the buyer builds a box around it himself. The manufacturer does offer some accessories on the order site. A WiFi module should cost $9, a suitable 10.1″ LCD module costs $69, while a 13.3″ variant costs $79. In addition, a camera module, a usb uart module and an emmc module are available. The sign itself is available for $129.
