A hands-on video shows a Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra variant with a front camera behind the screen. The version of that phone that was recently officially released in China has a hole in the screen for the camera.

In the video that can be seen on Weibo, two versions of the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra are compared: the variant with the hole in the screen for the front camera and a version without a hole, where the front camera is incorporated behind the screen. The phones otherwise look identical.

The front camera behind the screen is hardly visible in use. Only with a white background is a line visible where the camera is located. With different background colors or showing photos, the hidden camera is not visible in the video.

Xiaomi announced at the end of August that it would release smartphones with a front camera behind the screen next year. For this, the manufacturer uses the third generation of its Under-Display Camera technology, which is said to be better than the implementations that are already on the market.

It is not clear whether and when a variant of the Mi 10 Ultra with a camera behind the screen will actually be released. The device shown in the video may be a prototype. The device could serve as a showcase for the technology before it goes into mass production next year.

According to rumors, a version of the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra with a camera behind the screen may be released in October or November. Xiaomi released the Mi 10 Ultra in China in August. It is the manufacturer’s most advanced device to date.
