Halo Infinite multiplayer players only gain XP by completing challenges

Halo Infinite multiplayer mode players can only gain XP by completing the in-game challenges. Winning matches therefore does not give experience points, unless it is part of a challenge. The XP allows players to unlock in-game content.

John Junyszek, Community Manager at 343 Industries, says on Twitter that while playing and winning matches can be part of challenges, there are also other challenges in the game. The community manager confirms that it will not be possible to gain XP outside of those challenges. Users can gain XP through the daily or weekly challenges, which they can use to unlock content within the Battle Pass. The game will have both paid and free Battle Passes and new Battle Passes will become available each in-game season. Players can purchase old Battle Passes from previous seasons and unlock this content.

Several players on Reddit have expressed dissatisfaction with Halo Infinite’s current XP system. For example, Reddit user kami102 writes that since the challenges will be the only way to unlock the Battle Pass content, gamers will be forced to play the game a certain way. If a challenge is to get 15 kills with the Needler weapon, kami102 says, that could break the flow of gameplay. Especially if different players within the team want to play with the same weapon in order to complete that challenge.

Other users note that there are paid challenge swaps in the game that allow players with in-game money to swap the challenges. With that, 343 Industries would ‘lootbox’ the progress of Battle Passes, some players say. Users also regret that their sense of progress will be tied to challenges and not, for example, how often they win matches.

By the way, when playing the Tech Preview of Infinite, gamers found out that players only had a limited number of Daily Challenges and that they ran out relatively quickly. Junyszek indicates that this was a ‘bug’ and that there should be more daily challenges upon release. “It won’t be unlimited, but it will be very hard not to have one,” Junyszek says.

Halo Infinite will be released on December 8. Then the free-to-play multiplayer part also appears. The game will be available for Xbox Series X and S, One, and PC. Later, the co-op mode and Forge level editor will appear.
