Hackers threaten to publish 9/11 attack insurance files and demand ransom
Hacking group TheDarkOverlord threatens to make insurance files related to the September 11 attacks public. The organization is said to have penetrated the systems of a law firm and demanded an undisclosed amount in Bitcoin as a ransom.
TheDarkOverlord, a group of criminal hackers who previously made the news with the theft of the fifth season of Orange Is The New Black, claims to have stolen about 18,000 documents through the burglary. These are files related to the 9/11 attacks of major insurance companies such as Hiscox Syndicates and Lloyds of London. With the publication being threatened, TheDarkOverlord aims to “provide answers to the conspiracy theories about the attacks.” This is reported by the Motherboard.com website, citing a source within Hiscox Syndicates.
Around the claim In support of this, the hacker group has already leaked a handful of stolen files, which include a number of law firms, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transport Security Administration. According to Motherboard.com, the documents are still fairly innocent, but the hacker collective says it will publish more documents if the ransom is not paid quickly. The organization also threatens to blackmail people mentioned in the relevant files.
The extent of the leak is still unclear. Hiscox Syndicates says it is only processing one file linked to the attacks of September 11, 2001, which would not provide major new insights into the background of the terrorist acts. Despite this, the insurer is working closely with the British and American intelligence services in the investigation into the break-in.
