Hackers steal 500GB of data from Microsoft’s private GitHub repos
Hackers have stolen more than 500 gigabytes of data from Microsoft from private repositories on GitHub. The attackers plan to give the data away online. It’s not clear what exactly is in the data dump, but it doesn’t seem to be very important source code.
The hacker, or hackers, allegedly broke into Microsoft’s official GitHub account around March 28 this year. There they gained access to the company’s private repos. The hackers call themselves Shiny Hunters, and took the information to Bleeping Computer. The hackers say they have stolen more than 500GB of data. The initial plan was to sell it, but now the hackers are planning to leak it.
On hacker forums, the attackers have shown a sample of 1GB of data. There, some forum users doubt the authenticity of the data, partly because there are Chinese texts in the code.
The hackers also shared code with Bleeping Computer. It mainly contains samples of code and test projects. It also contains code from a PowerShell project called PowerSweep. According to Bleeping Computer, there are currently no indications that data has been stolen from, for example, Windows or Office. Microsoft has not yet commented on the leak.
