Criminals have tried to steal login data from chemical company DSM. They did this by placing USB sticks with spy software in a DSM parking lot, in the hope that employees would put them in their computers.

Data criminals have made an attempt to loot passwords and usernames of the chemical company DSM. They had placed several USB sticks in the company parking lot in the hope that employees would put them in their work computers. The software on the memory stick was able to send login details to an external website.

However, the attempt was unsuccessful; an employee found one of the usb sticks and immediately took it to the IT department. There, the malicious software was detected and the IP addresses the software communicated with were blocked. After that, the other USB sticks were located in the parking lot.

A spokesperson for DSM reports to De Limburger newspaper that the company has not filed a report. It would be ‘a rather clumsy attempt at data theft’. However, a memo has been circulated that once again urges employees not to insert unknown USB sticks into their computers.
