Hackers have obtained the private data of about 83 million customers of US bank JP Morgan. It would be one of the largest data breaches in history, although it mainly concerns less sensitive data such as name, e-mail address and telephone numbers.

The hackers gained access to the private data of 76 million households and 7 million business accounts, according to a report from the bank. This probably applies almost exclusively to Americans. The leaked data includes names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of account owners. Hackers would not have been able to access customer account numbers, passwords, usernames and dates of birth.

The bank does not say how the hackers gained access to the systems. Since this is data that has nothing to do with banking and is only needed for contact with customers or marketing, it is obvious that no banking systems have been hacked, but only one or more systems for contact with customers.

JP Morgan has not advised customers to change passwords. The bank does say that customers must be alert to fraud with the data in the coming period. Given the high number of 83 million affected, this is one of the largest known data thefts to date.
