Hackers loot data from Funcom game forums
Norwegian game developer Funcom warns that hackers have stolen email addresses, usernames and encrypted passwords in a hack on its forums. The passwords should be considered “lost” according to the developer.
These are the forums of the mmorpg titles Age of Conan, The Secret World, Anarchy Online and the adventure game The Longest Journey. Although the passwords were encrypted, the developer says they should be considered “lost”. The company does not elaborate on the encryption method, but it can be inferred from the wording that it cannot be very strong. Funcom does not report how many users have been affected, however, according to the site Leakedsource, it concerns just over a million accounts. Funcom has reset the users’ passwords.
Game accounts would not have been affected by the hack as they are on a different server. However, if users also used the forum password for the games, this should of course be changed as well. The same goes for other sites where the same password has been used. The hack occurred through a vulnerability in the vBulletin forum software. This has led to a large amount of data leaks at various game companies in recent times. Among them are Epic Games, the Dota 2 forums, and Clash of Kings.
