Hacker makes Widevine package available to stream Netflix on Raspberry Pi
A programmer has released a package for the Raspberry Pi that makes it possible to use Netflix and Amazon Prime on the minicomputer. A separate browser was always needed for this, but now there is a package that can do that by default.
The package adds Widevine to the Pi’s browser and was built by a hacker named Ventz. He previously built the Chromium Media Edition for the Pi, a separate version of the Chromium browser in which the user agent was adapted, so that it was possible to stream Netflix with it. Netflix, Amazon, and many other streaming services use Widevine DRM as a copyright protection tool, but it wasn’t available on the Raspberry Pi.
Ventz has now made Widevine available on the Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 400. Users can install it by simply entering sudo apt-get install libwidevinecdm0. Widevine also allows users to stream Disney+ and HBO, as well as audio services such as Spotify and Pandora.
