GoPro announces the Hero MAX, an action camera that can also be used as a 360-degree camera due to the presence of two lenses and sensors. The MAX has six built-in microphones for surround sound.

Like the also new GoPro Hero8 Black, the Hero MAX has a mounting bracket and a built-in screen. As a regular action camera, the Hero MAX loses out to the Hero8 Black. For example, the film resolution and speed are limited to 1440p60 and 1080p60 when using one sensor, and the device is waterproof up to five meters deep.

However, the Hero MAX can shoot 5.6k spherical videos at 30fps. These 360-degree images can be edited in the Go Pro app. The MAX can also take 360-degree photos with a resolution of 16.6 megapixels and panoramic photos with an angle of view of 270 degrees with a resolution of 6.2 megapixels. The 360-degree videos are stabilized with Max HyperSmooth video stabilization.

GoPro equips the Hero MAX with six built-in microphones; that should provide surround sound for 360-degree videos and good stereo sound for regular recordings. The Hero MAX will be available from October 24 for a suggested retail price of 530 euros. This makes the 360-degree camera a hundred euros more expensive than the Hero8 Black.
