GoPro has released a beta version of its Webcam app. It allows macOS users to use their GoPro Hero8 Black as a USB webcam. The company also says that a Windows version of the software is in the works.

GoPro announces the new functionality on its website. The app only works with the GoPro Hero8 Black. To connect this action cam to a Mac computer, users need to install the latest firmware for the camera first. Next, the Webcam desktop app must be installed. The camera can be connected with a USB-C cable. Furthermore, no accessories are required, although a stand or tripod is recommended, the company reports.

The new functionality works with Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Skype, and Discord, among others. In Google Chrome, the app can handle Zoom, YouTube Live and Webex. Engadget writes that the software also works with the web version of Slack. The new app does not yet work on Windows PCs, but a version for that operating system is currently in development, the company reports. It is not clear when this variant will be released.

GoPro is not the first company to offer such a webcam tool to its users. Other camera manufacturers have previously released similar apps. For example, Fujifilm, Panasonic, Olympus, and Canon previously came with webcam apps for their cameras.
