GoPro acquires French virtual reality company
GoPro has announced that it has acquired the French company Kolor. Kolor develops software with which photos and videos can be stitched together in order to generate panoramic images for use in, among other things, virtual worlds.
GoPro has not mentioned a takeover amount, but the company does say that Kolor’s software can be used to convert action images shot with GoPro cameras into a ‘virtual reality experience’.
The software of the French company has now also been made suitable for mobile devices and the required player can be run in a browser. Kolor will continue to operate from France and there will be no layoffs as a result of the acquisition.
GoPro sold approximately 1.3 million devices in the quarter. In the same quarter last year, that number was still 852,000 units. Turnover increased by 54 percent to 363 million dollars, or 331 million euros. In addition, GoPro makes a profit again: the camera manufacturer saw this double to 16.8 million dollars.
