Google would like to design its own soc, but how and why?
It’s been buzzing for over a year now: Google would design its own soc under the name Whitechapel for use in its Pixel smartphones. Why would Google do that, how does it work and what can we expect from it?
It is not at all strange that a smartphone manufacturer designs its own soc. In fact, almost all major smartphone manufacturers have done this or are in the process of doing so. Just think: Samsung designs and manufactures its own socs, Apple designs its own socs, just like Huawei. Xiaomi made its own soc a few years ago and put its own image signal processor in the Mix Fold. OPPO, sister brand of OnePlus, is also working on its own socs.
