Google working on operating system for ‘innovative AR device’
Google is working on an operating system for an ‘innovative’ augmented reality device. This is evident from vacancies of the search giant. Mark Lucovsky, who spent the past four years at Oculus, is now employed by Google as the AR-OS project lead.
On his LinkedIn page, Lucovsky writes that he joined Google to lead the team working on an augmented reality operating system. For the past four years, he was employed by Oculus as general manager operating systems.
Google has several vacancies online to expand the team. One states that candidates will work on an embedded, real-time platform, which will be the foundation for the next generation of AR experiences. ‘You will be responsible for the software for an innovative AR device’, according to the vacancy.
There are vacancies for positions in the United States and in the Canadian city of Waterloo. The latter is where the former North company is located. Google took over the maker of the Focals augmented reality glasses last year. Google said at the time that the employees would keep their location.
There are no concrete details about upcoming augmented reality devices from Google. Many major tech manufacturers are working on AR technology. In addition to Google, these include Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Magic Leap and Huawei.
