Google will sort the top search results in the Gmail app by relevance

Google is releasing an update for the iOS and Android versions of Gmail that will sort the top search results by relevance by default. Previously, search results were only sorted by date.

According to Google, these ‘top results’ are chosen using machine learning models. The machine learning models use “the search term, most recent emails and other relevant factors” to compile this top, says Google in a blog post. The results sorted by relevance are in a separate section, below which the results are simply sorted by date. The feature should be available within a few weeks “to all Google Workspace customers and users with a personal Google Account.”
