Developers creating Android apps for the Play Store will be required to enable two-factor authentication on their developer accounts later this year. In the future, developers will also have to pass on their address details to Google.

Starting today, developers can specify their account type, which allows developers to indicate whether their account is personal or belongs to an organization. Google reports that this remains optional for the time being, but that developers must indicate their account type starting Tuesday when they want to change their contact information.

From August, Google will also make this mandatory when creating new Google Play developer accounts. At the same time, the company is making two-factor authentication mandatory for such new accounts. “Later this year” will also require all existing Play Store developers to confirm their account type and address details and activate 2fa.

Google will also ask developers to confirm their address. Currently, Google only asks for an email address and phone number when creating a developer account, but address information will also become mandatory for all Play Store developers in the future.

Google says it’s introducing this requirement to ensure that every developer account is created by a real person. Google reports that the company does not disclose developer contact information, but that they are only used for identity verification and communication with developers.
