Google wants to replace Chromebook password with owner’s smartphone

Google is working on a feature to replace the password on a Chromebook with the owner’s smartphone. It is not yet entirely clear how the function functions exactly, because the feature is not yet finished.

The feature called ‘Easy Unlock’ is included in the developer version of Chrome OS and users can turn it on manually. Despite this, the functionality doesn’t do anything yet; presumably it requires an Android app that isn’t there yet, reports Android Police.

The exact functioning of the function is unclear, but Google claims in the not yet working setup that it is more secure than the regular unlock. The function is still far from complete: after the first of three pages of the setup, it stops and continues to search for the device. Presumably it works with an Android device where the user is logged in with the same Google account as on the Chromebook.
