Google TV gets kid profiles with screen time management
Google provides its Google TV operating system with profiles for children. Parents can set which apps to use and it is possible to specify screen time restrictions. The feature will be released in the ‘coming months’.
Profiles for children can consist of an existing Google account or a new profile with only a name and age, Google writes. Parents can indicate which apps are available on the children’s profiles and the profiles receive recommendations tailored to content from apps that are suitable for children. There is integration with Google Play Family Library, so that previously purchased films and series can be viewed via the children’s profiles.
The profiles also have a modified appearance, designed for young viewers, with bright colors and illustrations. There are several themes to choose from. Google will also add avatars designed for children.
There will be screen time management where daily limits can be specified and a bedtime schedule can be set. Children using the profiles will then see three ‘alerts’ when their screen time is running out or when bedtime is approaching. Parents can also add ‘bonus time’, according to Google, to temporarily increase that limit.
It is possible to lock Google TV profiles with a PIN, so that children cannot switch to another profile with more rights. Some of the settings can be managed through the Family Link app. It also shows how long children use certain apps and how long they can block apps.
Google will make the child profiles available on Google TV devices in the United States this month. The functionality should be available worldwide in the coming months. The Google TV operating system is on the latest Chromecast and on TVs that Sony, Philips and TCL are releasing this year.
