Google to shut down group communication service Spaces in April

Google will shut down its group communication service Spaces on April 17 of this year. While the company doesn’t really give a reason for the decision, it does say it “will carry everything we’ve learned into our other products and services.”

Google says that users can use the service until March 3 to post messages. After that, everything goes into a read-only state. Also, new users can no longer be added to groups. On April 17, Spaces will actually be completely removed, including all posted content. Users must therefore have made any backups before that time.

Spaces was put down by Google as an app that helps a user or group of users more easily to have conversations about specific topics. Google Search, YouTube and Chrome are built into the app, which made it easy to place photos, videos and articles from those three apps on a Space. All in all, the service has been running for just under a year since its closure.
