Google starts rolling out new Gmail interface to all users

Google is making a new Gmail interface available to all users. At the beginning of February, business users were already being transferred and in June the interface became available for the first private individuals. It is still possible to restore the old interface.

Google indicates that from now on the new interface will be rolled out to all Gmail users who have Google Chat enabled in their settings. With the new interface, Google Meet, Chat and Spaces will be integrated into the e-mail service, among other things. Users can switch between those services from the left bar of the Gmail interface. It is also possible to hide those Chat and Meet elements so that only Gmail is shown. The appearance itself is also adjusted. The interface gets elements from Googles Material Design 3with pastel colors and rounded corners.

The new Gmail interface was already rolled out to the first business users in February. In June, Google made the new UI more widely available to “a group of Gmail users” who have Chat enabled in the client. It is also possible to go back to the old interface. Users can do that in the settings, by clicking ‘Return to the original Gmail view’ under ‘Quick Settings’. It is not known until when that will be possible.

In the coming months, Google will make other improvements to Gmail. The email service will get an “enhanced experience” for tablet users later this year, better support for emojis, and new accessibility features.
