Google starts releasing Instant Apps for Android

Google has released the ability to develop Instant Apps for Android, applications that can be run without installation. Developers are encouraged to create Instant Apps alongside their existing app.

On its developer site, Google is calling on developers to start developing Instant Apps for Android. The internet giant has put a step-by-step plan online with which application makers can turn their existing app into an Instant App, allowing owners of an Android device to run the software without having to install it. Instant Apps are only available from Android 6.0 due to underlying technical requirements. Google promises developers that they can maintain their standard application and the Instant App variant simultaneously.

According to Android Police, the first Instant Apps that Android device owners can use were demonstrated during a session at the Google I/O developer meeting. This includes applications from Periscope, Vimeo and an application from The New York Times with which crossword puzzles can be made. The applications should appear in the Play Store, but it seems that not everyone has access to them yet. According to Android Police, a number of the Instant Apps made available are not yet functional.

Earlier this year, Google already activated the option to use Instant Apps, after announcing the new functionality at Google I/O last year.
