Google has announced a new feature for Sheets that uses artificial intelligence to detect the pattern between the data from different columns. Using a formula, it is then possible to have data completed in a new column.

This feature, called Sheets Smart Fill, will be available sometime later this year, Google writes. This ai function detects and learns the pattern between the data of two columns. If the user then enters new data in a third column based on the data in two columns, Sheets Smart Fill can recognize the pattern and fill the entire column based on a suggested formula.

Google gives the example of a column in Sheets that is completely filled with names of people. If the user then wants to split it in two, in the form of a separate column for the first names and a separate column for the last names, Sheets Smart Fill can indent it. Once the user enters the first first name in a new column, Sheets will automatically recognize the pattern, generate and display the corresponding formula, and fill the rest of the column accordingly.

There is also another new feature in the works for Sheets. It’s called Smart Cleanup, and it’s meant to help users quickly clean up, display consistently, and better organize large amounts of data. Once the user imports data, Smart Cleanup will provide suggestions for improvement in a side panel, such as removing duplicate entries. A small bar chart is also visible where information about the imported data can be seen, such as a value that occurs most often in a column. According to Google, this can be useful for quickly detecting certain abnormalities.
