Google removes option to order Uber rides via Maps
US users can no longer request and pay for Uber taxi rides directly from the Google Maps service. It is not known why the functionality has been removed from the map service.
According to Android Police, Google has quietly removed the feature to order Uber rides from the Android app, after it was previously removed from Maps’ iOS app. Users can still select a destination and open the Uber app via Maps to order a ride for the route.
Google announced the integration of Uber into the Maps service in January 2017 and the company said they were “trying” the feature. Users had to log into Maps with their Uber account and then no longer need the Uber app to request rides.
It is not known whether Uber or Google has decided to end the collaboration. Google is working with Waymo to set up a taxi service for autonomous vehicles and the company has invested in Uber’s competitor Lyft. In addition, there are longer reports that Uber is working on its own map service.
