Google has released the second beta of Android 13. During the keynote at its developer conference I/O, the search giant did not discuss any new features of the operating system.

However, Google has announced which of the functions will only come in Android 13 and which will also be available on older Android versions. For example, it will be possible to set the language and the ‘photo picker’ per app, which allows an app to access only images that the user chooses, only for Android 13.

In addition, there are improvements in multitasking for foldable smartphones and tablets. Those improvements will also be available for Android 12L, the version of Android 12 for devices with larger screens than smartphones. The improvements to the Messages app, which is getting wider support for WhatsApp alternative RCS, will be available for all Android phones. The new Wallet app will also be available on older phones.

Unlike in previous years, Google did not announce any new key features at its developer conference. In Android 13, the search giant previously announced, apps can have basic versions of their own icons for use in ‘themed icons’. As a result, all icons are in the same style and with the same color scheme.

Android 13 also gets a new WiFi permission, NEARBY_WIFI_DEVICES. With this permission, apps will be able to connect to other Wi-Fi devices without having to share the device’s location and give permission via Android. Apps that want to connect to nearby Wi-Fi devices, but do not need location data, can opt for this runtime permission.

Developers of apps that can generate their own Quick Settings buttons can use a new api in Android 13 to call up a banner in their app that allows the own settings button to be added directly to the Quick Settings panel. This eliminates the need for users to exit the app to add the button to the panel at the top of the screen. The company estimates that there will be platform stability from June; then the third beta is expected. Android 13 will not be released until after July.

The new beta can be installed alongside Google’s own Pixel phones on the Asus Zenfone 8, Lenovo P12 Pro, OnePlus 10 Pro, OPPO Find X5 Pro, Realme GT 2 Pro, AQUOS sense6, Camon 19 Pro, Vivo X80 Pro, Xiaomi 12, Xiaomi 12 Pro and Xiaomi Pad 5.
