Google releases its own VPN service in the Google One app
Google releases its own VPN service. It is available with a Google One subscription, the company’s paid storage service. For now, the VPN can only be used on Android, and only for American users.
The service is called VPN for Google One. The VPN is only available to users of that paid storage service and only with a subscription that includes a minimum of 2TB. The vpn is built into the Google One app and can be turned on and off from there. All traffic on the device, including from outside the One app, is then encrypted.
Google says the VPN does not keep any logs such as DNS queries, connection timestamps and IP addresses. However, aggregated data is collected that, according to the company, cannot be linked to individual users. Google has made the libraries of the vpn open source. Sometime in 2021, the company wants to have end-to-end encryption tested in an independent audit.
For now, the service is only available on Android. An iOS and Windows version will follow later, but it is not known when. Also, only American users can now use it. This will be extended to other countries in the future.
