Google releases Android 14 for Pixel smartphones
Google has officially released Android 14. This version of the mobile operating system is now available for supported Pixel phones. Upgrades for phones from other manufacturers will follow later.
Google confirms the release of Android 14 in a blog post. The OS will be available for the Pixel 4a 5G and newer. Pixel users will receive a notification when they can install the upgrade. Phones from other manufacturers, including Samsung, Nothing, OnePlus, OPPO and Xiaomi, will be upgraded to Android 14 later this year, Google has confirmed.
The arrival of Android 14 was previously announced. The OS will, among other things, get new options to adjust the lock screen. For example, users can choose from different clocks. Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro phones will also have the option to generate a wallpaper with AI.
Android 14 will also receive more extensive support for passkeys; users can, for example, use a fingerprint scanner to log in to third-party apps. Users also get a new Health Connect feature, which stores health and fitness data on the device itself, rather than in the cloud.
The OS also receives support for 10-bit HDR images and several new accessibility features. This includes an improved option to zoom in apps and on the home screen, more readable text when scaling is applied and better support for hearing aids.
