Google has announced a change to its Gmail service that will allow users to receive larger attachments. The maximum file size has been increased to 50MB. This does not apply to sent attachments.

Google is announcing the change on its G Suite blog. In it, the company states that the larger file size will come into effect for all Gmail users from Thursday. They should be able to use the new feature within the next three days.

Until now, there was a limit of 25MB for receiving attachments. For larger files, users should turn to Google Drive, according to the search giant. Users who want to send an attachment themselves are still limited to the 25MB limit. Google does not disclose why that will not change. It also appears that there are no plans to adjust the maximum file size for outgoing attachments.

Google started offering Gmail accounts with 1GB storage in 2004, which was initially seen as a joke. Meanwhile, the free storage has increased to 15GB per user, which is shared between Gmail, Drive and Photos. Google previously announced that as of this month no more javascript files can be sent as attachments for security reasons.
