Google puts Fiber plans on hold and lays off some staff
Google immediately stops its introduction plans for Google Fiber in ten different American cities. In addition, the internet giant is firing nine percent of the staff in the Access department, which includes Fiber. Fiber head Craig Barratt has also resigned.
The introduction of Google Fiber has been halted in ten different cities in the US. These are cities across the country, including Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and San Diego. That writes Ars Technica, which also comes with the percentage of layoffs. For Chicago and San Diego, there’s still the consolation that those two places are on the Webpass list of cities. That’s the wireless Internet access from which Google acquired the supplier and developer earlier this month.
It is not known who will succeed Craig Barratt at Google Fiber. Last month it was revealed through anonymous sources that Google was planning to halve the size of the Google Fiber team due to a disappointing amount of Fiber subscribers. An employee allegedly claimed that after about 2.5 years, Google Fiber had only 200,000 subscribers, while Google would like to reach five million subscribers within five years. In any case, there does not seem to be any question of halving the workforce.
