Google pulls Project Tango’s 3D camera technology out of experimental phase
Project Tango will definitively be accommodated within Google, as a result of which the project will be ‘promoted’ from an experimental research group. This indicates that the internet giant has plans to further develop the hardware that can make a 3D image of the environment with cameras.
The plans will remove Project Tango from the ATAP department and give it a separate development branch within Google, it was announced on the corresponding Google+ page. According to the internet giant, Project Tango is getting “a new home” and will be further developed. In addition, no further plans for the future were revealed.
The ATAP group is used by Google for experimental technology. Many new ideas are developed, but many projects are eventually discontinued. By ‘promoting’ Project Tango, it seems that Google sees a future in it.
With Project Tango, Google is developing hardware that can create a 3D image of the environment with cameras. A smartphone has already been shown, but a tablet with 3D capabilities should also appear on the market this year. Exact launch dates for the consumer market have not yet been announced.
