Google will stop its business social networking platform Google Currents in 2023, which saw the light of day in 2019. The company redirects users to Spaces, a separate subsection in the Google Workspace environment that offers much of the same functionality.

“Now that Spaces is here, we will slowly pull the plug on Google Currents in 2023,” it sounds in a blog post from the American search giant. “The content and communities that remain on Currents will be transferred to Spaces.”

That subsection of the Google Workspace is getting new features such as support for larger groups and more communication tools for the executives in an organization. Google has also made improvements to the search engine of the Spaces subsection and applied additional security measures that should improve the protection of data in a professional environment. Organizations working with Google Currents will be informed about the platform’s phasing out in the coming months and will receive information on how to transfer their data to Spaces.

Google Currents was unveiled in 2019 at the then Google Next event. The company saw Currents as a replacement for the former Google+. Currents had a similar interface to Google+ and was aimed at the business market. In Google Currents, just like in Google+, communities could be created in which content could be shared. In Currents, however, posts could be sorted by relevance or reverse chronology. Entries from key figures, such as a director, could be pinned to the top.

Google finally stopped using Google+ for consumers at the end of 2018 after the company discovered a privacy bug. At the time, the company stated that the Google+ APIs were “difficult to develop and maintain”.
